World Environment Day on 5 June is the biggest international day for the environment. Led by UNEP and held annually since 1973, the event has grown to be the largest global platform for environmental outreach, with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the planet. In this year 2022, World Environment Day is being celebrated with ‘Only One Earth’ as the theme, focusing on ‘Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature,’.
As a responsible business in the industry Watawala Planation PLC also became a part of the biggest international day for the environment. Watawala Planation PLC organized a series of activities to celebrate the WED 2022 with the support of school children, government organization, village as well as our staff members. In this year other than tree planting program WPL targeted our future leaders name children. WPL invited schools’ children in Udugama, Thalangha and Nakiyadeniya to Watawala Plantaions PLC owned Thalangaha Training center, Galle to celebrate the WED 2022. With the participate of the school children we have conducted awareness campaign for school children and government officers on protecting and saving the environment. We organized quiz competition to check and improve knowledge on identify native animals to the area and general knowledge in environment protection. More than eighty children participated to the art competition with the topic “Protect the Environment.” And conducted waste reuse innovation competition with twelve children. Selected best 3 children from each competition and gifted voucher to buy books. In align with the WED 2022 all three estates planted native trees and fruit trees.
With the supporting World Environment Day 2022 and the #OnlyOneEarth campaign, we could give small help to ensure this unique and beautiful planet remains a comfortable home for all
species.
