Dickoya Estate – Re-building lives following the Flood
In May 2013, heavy rains did cause the worst flooding in Dickoya for the first time. Being a first time experience, many of our Associates did get badly affected. Our factory buildings were badly damaged and so were the infrastructural and housing facilities that were available. Management therefore had a huge responsibility to bring back normalcy into the lives of the estate community - to get back to their feet and on with their lives. All of this involved a great degree of urgency, commitment and funds. With the elements of ‘Urgency’ and ‘Commitment’ foremost and abundantly available, securing the required funding did not pose a problem.

Confident on the support available from our NGO partners, a plan was drawn up and put into action. The process involved working with Berendina Microfinance Services to provide houses for the affected families. The Management in joint collaboration with Berendina was able to assist those affected and build 14 new houses within a period of a few months to benefit about 150 people. The objective of these projects was to provide people with fast, practical assistance to minimize the lasting physical and emotional effects of the disaster; thereby enabling them to take back control of their lives.
